D. Prima di tutto, grazie per rispondere alle nostre domande, Vorremmo che ci raccontassi qualcosa di più sul tuo nuovo disco.

R. Grazie per il vostro interesse!

D. Come lo hai realizzato? Visto che molti dischi che stanno uscendo adesso sono coinvolti dal lockdown dovuto alla pandemia, al tuo è successa la stessa cosa? E se sì, come?

R. All'inizio della pandemia avevo sicuramente più tempo e spazio creativo. In quel periodo, come la maggior parte dei miei colleghi, smisi di esibirmi in concerto, e per un po' fu chiuso anche il mio studio di registrazione. Durante questo periodo, sono stato in grado di concentrarmi maggiormente sugli aspetti creativi del mio mestiere. Un paio di canzoni di questo album sono state scritte in quel periodo. Una in particolare, "On the Downlow", è stata scritta dopo che sono tornato dall'Italia nel marzo 2020, ed ero in quarantena. Questa è l'unica canzone dell'album che (indirettamente) fa riferimento alla pandemia. Se si ascoltano attentamente i testi, penso che capirete cosa intendo. Una volta che le cose hanno cominciato ad aprirsi un po', sono diventato incredibilmente impegnato in studio, producendo e registrando dischi per altri artisti. Perché, come hai detto, c'è stata un'esplosione di creatività, quindi il mio progetto (come spesso accade) ha dovuto passare in secondo piano per un po'. Ma mi sono preso il mio tempo e, quando mi sono sentito pronto, ho registrato questo album!

D. Nel tuo album ci sono molte collaborazioni; com'è stato lavorare con quegli artisti? Hai avuto precedenti interazioni con loro, sono tuoi amici o è stata la prima volta che li hai incontrati? Hai prodotto qualcuno dei loro album?

R. Tutti i musicisti dell'album sono persone con cui ho avuto precedenti interazioni. Nel caso di molti di loro, ho registrato o prodotto i loro progetti. Ad esempio, ho prodotto due dischi da solista per John Popper, oltre a diversi progetti per Crystal Bowersox, entrambi presenti nel mio lavoro. Ho una lunga storia con molti dei musicisti di questo disco, e sì, li considero tutti miei amici.

D. Come hai fatto in passato, alcune delle tracce di questo disco riguardano contenuti socialmente impegnati. Pensi che l'arte in generale e la musica in particolare svolgano ancora un ruolo importante nel rendere le persone più consapevoli del loro ruolo nella società?

R. Certo, penso che la musica possa servire a portare consapevolezza riguardo ai problemi che affrontiamo nella nostra società. Viviamo in un tempo in cui la condizione umana sembra diventare sempre più difficile. Raramente faccio uno sforzo consapevole per esprimermi politicamente nella mia musica. Invece, parlo di ciò che mi viene in mente, di ciò che provo nella mia vita e di ciò che vedo nel mondo intorno a me.

D. Ho ascoltato il disco diverse volte e ho notato un'enorme varietà di sfumature musicali, ma prevale comunque un atteggiamento rilassato, positivo o propositivo. È solo una mia sensazione?

R. Concordo sul fatto che l'umore generale dell'album sia rilassato e ottimista, anche quando l'argomento di alcune canzoni è pesante. Detto questo, penso che la bellezza della musica sia che ognuno sente qualcosa di diverso da essa. Non tutti quelli che ascoltano il mio album avrebbero la stessa impressione, e questo è fantastico. Questa, ovviamente, è l'arte; ciascuno la vede, la sente e la interpreta attraverso il “filtro” della propria esperienza.

D. Ora sei in Italia: hai notato cambiamenti in questo Paese dall'ultima volta che sei stato qui? E cosa ti aspetti dai tuoi show italiani? Ci sarà presto un tour estivo che farà tappa anche in Italia? Ti stiamo aspettando!

R. Sinceramente non ho notato un gran cambiamento, nel senso che le persone che incontro sono le stesse. Aperte, amorevoli e piene di desiderio di vivere libere. Lo stesso si può dire dalla mia esperienza a casa. Ancora una volta, sto parlando di interazione umana, non di manovre politiche. Questa è tutta un'altra storia, e non sono qualificato per commentare l'attuale situazione politica in Italia, dal momento che non ho abbastanza informazioni. E, sì, spero di tornare presto per un tour più lungo!!!!

• First of all, thank you for answering our questions. We would like for you to tell us a bit more about this new record. Thanks for being interested!!!

• What was your process making it? Since many records that are coming out now are affected by the pandemic lockdown, did the same thing happen to yours? And if so, how? At the beginning of the pandemic, I certainly had more time and creative space. At that time, like most of my colleagues, I stopped performing in concert, and for a while my recording studio was also shut down. During this period, I was able to focus more on the creative aspects of my own craft. A couple of the songs on this album were written during that time. One in particular, “On the Downlow“ was written after I returned from Italy in March 2020, and was in quarantine. This is the only song on the album that (indirectly) references the pandemic. If you listen closely to the lyrics, I think you will see what I mean. Once things began to open up a bit. I became incredibly busy in the studio, producing and recording records for other artists. Because, as you mentioned, there was a burst of creativity so my own project (as often happens) had to take the backseat for a while. But, I took my time and when I felt like I was ready, I recorded this album!
• On your album there are many collabs; what was it like working with those artists? Did you have prior interactions with them, are they your friends, or was this the first time you've met them? Have you produced any of their albums? All of the musicians on the album are people with whom I’ve had prior interactions. In the case of many of them, I have either recorded, or produced their projects. For example, I’ve produced two solo albums for John Popper, as well as several projects for Crystal Bowersox both of whom appear on my album. I have a long history with many of the musicians on this record, and yes, I consider them all my friends.

• Like you've done before, some of the tracks in this record are about socially engaged content. What do you think regarding the current political situation? Do you think that art in general and music in particular still play an important role in making people more aware of their role in society? Of course, I think that music can serve to bring awareness about issues that we confront in our society. We live in a time where the human condition seems to be becoming increasingly difficult. I rarely make a conscious effort to be political in my music. Instead, I speak about what comes to my mind, and what I experience in my life and what I see in the world around me.

• I've listened to your record several times, and I've noticed a huge variety of musical nuances, but still a relaxed, positive, or proactive, attitude prevails. Is it just my feeling? I would agree, that the general mood of the album is relaxed and upbeat, even when the subject matter of some of the songs is heavy. Having said that, I think the beauty of music is that everyone feels something different from it. Not everyone listening to my album would have the same impression, and that is great. That, of course, is what art is all about; each person sees, hears, feels and interprets it through the “filter" of their own experience.

• You are now in Italy: did you notice any change in this country since the last time you've been here? And what do you expect from your italian shows? Will there be a summer tour soon that will also stop in Italy? We are waiting for you! Honestly, I haven’t noticed that much of a change, in the sense that the people I encounter are the same. Open, loving, and full of a desire to live free. The same can be said from my experience at home. Again, I’m talking about human interaction, not political maneuvering. This is another story entirely, and I am not qualified to comment on the current political situation in Italy, since I do not have enough information. And, yes, I’m hoping to be back for a longer tour sometime soon!!!!
